The wapiti cabin is a forest service cabin located around 20 miles down the road from Big Sky, Montana. It is a 2 mile walk in, and because of the snow, we took in our food and goods on a sled and a toboggan. We brought our snowshoes but thankfully the snow wasn’t deep enough to have to use them.
My hubby and I stayed at this cabin on the eve of the millennium 2000 - 21 years ago. There is a wood burning stove for heat, and wood at the site, and we hauled in our drinking water. No electricity of course! The cabin has pretty comfortable cots, we brought warm bedding. My pioneer roots kicked in— even though it’s roughing it, it felt good to get out of the comfort zone for a few days and back to nature! We went tobogganing the second day and that was a blast💥 definitely felt like a kid again.
On the way home we ate dinner and sipped a brew at a great spot in Belgrade , The Hop. It is a large barn with two levels. 50 Montana microbrews on tap, plus 2 hard ciders. The tacos were 👍🏼. You choose 3 salsas to garnish your three tacos with from a list of around 15.
We then headed to The Ridge, which is a really nice athletic club in Bozeman and had a hot tub and steam. Perfect way to end our pioneer road trip. Definitely a relaxing drive the rest of the way home. Wintering!
